        crickl is from...

E-mom at Chrysalis is having a poetry drive. *lol* And she wants us to write I Am From poems. So here, e-mudder, my I Am From which I wrote 3 years ago when my daughter had to write one for an English assignment.

        I am from orange popsicles,
dripping down my chin and elbow,
from hula hoops, roller skates with keys
and a purple Huffy ten speed
        From the influence of hippies
        and the 60’s and 70’s,
        The Beattles, Monkees, James Taylor,
        The Eagles, the BeeGees.
From air raid drills and the Viet Nam War.
        Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan.

        I am from the suburbs
        of a growing desert city,
        loving homes and big families,
        neighbors talking and borrowing,
        playing hide and seek, football
        and kickball under the streetlight.
From a friend dying in the night in her bed.

I am from the dust storms and cactus
and grit in hair and teeth,
        from toasting in the sun,
        floating on the Salt River,
        neighborhood swimming pools,
Dr. Pepper and fresh blue skies.
        From Bonanza, the Beaver,
the Brady Bunch and Charlie’s Angels.

I am from camping in the mountains
and brown hair, from Bob and Jackie,
From far off grandparents and relations,
And the reputations of 4 older siblings.
A wayward sister, a far off brother in the navy.

I am from spoons balanced on noses
at holiday dinners and loud laughter.
        Inside jokes and practical jokes.
        Nose pants?

        From don’t talk to strangers,
do unto others and stand up straight.

I am from a small Baptist church
        full of love and mercy.
        From a large Baptist church
that drew people in with love and mercy.
From FSBC, big G, youth group,
choir tours and busses full of kids.
The tunnels, the pink sidewalk and Slide Rock.

In my imagination I'm from Scots
        and Kilts and bagpipes,
from the South and the Northwest
and the Southwest of the US.
        Beef stew and chimichangas,
        biscuits and tortillas.

From the death of a brother
        an airplane crash,
        the silence of grieving….
        Sshhhh.
Looking at old photos and slides
        in the living room, remembering.
        From the disillusions
        of older siblings’ divorces.
And the 60 year marriage of my parents.

        I am from looking through
        the cedar chest at memories,
sitting in a dark, cool closet
        imagining.
        I could never have imagined
all that God has brought me through
And all that life has put me through
…..but I am thankful for it all.

        I remember 9/11 and 9/13

Yesterday I picked up Maggie from her jr high school along with 2 friends who I take home. They were all talking about having seen a video about 9/11. None of them remember that day, they were all 4 years old then. And they watched it with a sense of detached horror that something like that happened in our country. They talked about the man on the film who jumped out of a window in the World Trade Center as it burned. They talked about the building just crumbling down and the debri blowing out through the tall buildings like tunnels like billowing clouds, people disappearing as it consumed them as they ran. They were horrified as they watched video of the planes crashing into those buildings. And they wondered what it would have been like to have been in that building, waiting to die as it crashed down.

I cannot imagine that it's been 8 years since that morning. It seems like years, but not 8 years ago. It was a horrifying week for us for more reasons than the 9/11 attacks. I was homeschooling my kids at that time. Hannah was at the school for band practice though and Charles was in Phoenix for a meeting. He called around 8 or 9am to tell me to turn on the television. I remember just sobbing as I watched it unfold over and over and over and over again as the days passed. The buildings, the smoke, the planes, the Pentagon, the crater in Pennsylvania made by the fourth crash. We didn't know if it was over.....we waited with a panicky feeling as the days passed and we turned on the television each day to find out if there was anything more. It was like waiting for the other dreadful shoe to drop.

Charles came home and we watched a lot of television. We felt a strong connection with the rest of our country, stronger than any other time in our lives before or since then. We saw people praying on television, public leaders just pouring out their fears, pleading with God, humbled. People met for prayer. People wandered into our church at any time of the day to talk to Charles and other leaders there. So many questions, so many turning to God for answers.

Well, for us, for our little town, the other shoe dropped two days later. A 19 year old young man, well known in town and the oldest son of our very good friends killed himself. He thought the world could never be the same again. He had so many questions and fears and such anger in his heart.....thoughts overwhelming him as they plagued his mind. There were other factors too that I won't go into, but he felt his world was ending. He mentioned his fears to his family, but of course, they did not realize (how could they?) how tortured he was about it all. Everyone was feeling so insecure. But he could no longer see hope in his life. So in a final, permanent act of impulse and despair, he left us.

Our church and our town were shell shocked. Suddenly it wasn't just terror on the east coast, viewed for us only on a television. This act left us reeling and heart broken in our own circle, a very small towny circle. Such difficult days. We started taking every sad look or worried word that our youth in town had very seriously and we dragged them in to talk to us, the high school in town brought in professional counselors for anyone who wanted to talk. Scary days.

I cannot separate the two events now. They were extreme traumas....two in one week. People walked around in a daze, tears just behind their eyes at all times. We had no words, we didn't understand, but we did pray and sought God's help. This is also what I remember when I think back to that time.

Yet people kept turning to God. Tragedy turns us to God. Even someone who seems indifferent to religion and spiritual life will call out to God in a moment of danger or tragedy. So in a way.....a very far off, think about it deeply way, it was almost good for our country to go through something of this proportion. I hate that it happened but it shows you that deep down, people do still turn to God.

Remembering that day, that week, and seeing where our nation is these days, just 8 years later, I just think......God help us. We (I have to include myself here) are so affluent, so comfortable, proud and selfish. We are lulled back into it so quickly.

I just bought the new Jars of Clay CD and there is a song that describes our current apathy, our lulled apathy. Take off your blinders and talk to each other. We need to say things and be heard, we need a stronger sense of community and a much stronger hope and faith in God. Our lives are not meaningless.....unless you let them be.

        Headphones
I don't have to hear it, if I don't want to
I can drown this out, pull the curtains down on you
it's a heavy world, it's too much for me to care
If I close my eyes, it's not there

With my headphones on, with my headphones on
With my headphones on, with my headphones on

We watch television...but the sound is something else
Just a song played against the drama,
so the hurt is never felt
        I take in the war-fires, and I'm
        chilled by the current events
it's so hopeless, but there's a pop song in my

Headphones on, in my headphones on

With my headphones on, with my headphones on

At the Tube Stop, you sit down across from me
(I can see you looking back at me)
        I think I know you
By the sad eyes that I see
I want to tell you (It's a heavy world)
        Everything will be okay
You wouldn't hear it (I don't want to have to hear it)
So we go our separate ways...

With our headphones on, with our headphones on
With our headphones on, with our headphones on
I don't wanna be the one who tries to figure it out
I don't need another reason I should care about you
You don't want to know my story
You don't want to own my pain
Living in a heavy, heavy world
And there's a pop song in my head
I don't want to have to hear it

        July 2008 Poetic License

The Poetic License carnival will be up at Robin's blog, Pensieve Friday morning. She challenged us this month with a poetic form named after her blog. This is the form:

What is a Pensieve? A titled, five-line poem; each line correlates to one of the five senses--sight, sound, scent, taste, touch--and describes the subject (title). The goal is for the reader to take on the poem as his own, being able to "experience" your subject through your words, by seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and feeling what you described.

So here is my poem for the month. I had a really meaningful time writing it!

        The Word of God

Ancient Words in leather binding, crisp, thin pages trimmed in gold....like royalty
Crinkling and whooshing as pages flip by
Brushing my face with the scent of leather and the old pages
I feast on Words sweeter than the honeycomb, satisfying a craving deep within
Working the satin place marker between peaceful fingers, I ponder this Treasure lying across my lap

        Haiku for you

        It's time for
        Mid-month Every Month at PENSIEVE
        Want this button?
        .

The challenge this month is to write a Haiku. Here is my effort.

        Snow
        Dark sky rains down white
        Blanket of delicate flakes
        Stills the earth....and me

        Chariot of Change
        Blow wind, do your work
Take the ice and chill with you
        Usher in the Spring

        Spring's End
        Children skip home, free
        Summer has released them...Whee!
        Now mom's free days end

        A Limerick for March

Robin at Pensieve is having another Pensieve's Poetic License day. I'm trying it again, this time with correct form and following every rule. *blush* This month's challenge is writing a limerick using March words.

O' the Irish have such a fine Easter
And a green shamrock kite is a pleaser
        But when leprechauns sing
        And it's windy in Spring
Flying kites will toss you on your keister!

        And another:

Have you seen the Spring Shamrock so green
Sweetest kite that the Irish had seen
        But a leprechaun came
Said the wind was to blame
And that Easter kite blew off the string

        Ode to Paint

        Ode to paint

        Apple green, apple green,
I love to paint things apple green...
        it looks so clean,
        with satin sheen,
oh how I love this apple green..

I paint it on my ceiling
I paint it in the bath
        And when I’m done
I look to see my children shake and laugh

Cuz as I’m painting to and fro
I splatter paint on hair and clothes
On my glasses, up my nose
Even green on my pink toes

I’ll paint it in each of my rooms
You may say, she is writing on fumes!
        But I say, Oh no
        I just love it so…
Oh, this green with it's sheen,
        It's so keen

Tomorrow I will paint with brown
And I’ll think of rhymes and write them all down

        Home

I finally found the lyrics to the Michael Card song I tried to refer to the other day! Thanks to KQ for typing them all out for me from her Poeima album!

        Home

        Home is a comfort
        And home is a light
A place to leave the darkness outside
Home is a peaceful and ever-full feeling
A place where a soul safely hides
And being at home should remind you that still
There's a place that's prepared just for you
And I think my home is just heaven's reflection
As long as my home's here with you

Home is where someone is waiting and loving
And happy to see you again
        That half of your heart
        That somebody else treasures
The one who's your forever friend
But it seems that He's told me
The life that He's showing me
Is a life mostly spent on the road
But when the world's empty charm has done all of its harm
I know that His love waits for me in your arms

        'Cause home is a comfort
        And home is a light
A place to leave the darkness outside
Home is a peaceful and ever-full feeling
A place where a soul safely hides
And being at home should remind you that still
There's a place that's prepared just for you
And I think my home is just heaven's reflection
As long as my home's here with you

And being at home should remind you that still
There's a place that's prepared just for you
And I think my home is just heaven's reflection
As long as my home's here with you

        Ancient Words

"The Bible is the best of all books, for it is the word of God and teaches us the way to be happy in this world and in the next. Continue therefore to read it and to regulate your life by its precepts." --John Jay, the man whom George Washington appointed as the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

        Ancient Words

        Holy words long preserved
for our walk in this world,
They resound with God's own heart
Oh, let the Ancient words impart.

Words of Life, words of Hope
Give us strength, help us cope
In this world, where e'er we roam
Ancient words will guide us Home.

        CHORUS:
        Ancient words ever true
        Changing me, and changing you.
We have come with open hearts
Oh let the ancient words impart.

        Holy words of our Faith
        Handed down to this age.
        Came to us through sacrifice
Oh heed the faithful words of Christ.

        Holy words long preserved
For our walk in this world.
They resound with God's own heart
Oh let the ancient words impart

        Butt prints in the sand

        Butt Prints In The Sand

One night I had a wondrous dream,
One set of footprints there was seen,
The footprints of my precious Lord,
But mine were not along the shore.

But then some stranger prints appeared,
And I asked the Lord, "What have we here?"
Those prints are large and round and neat,
"But Lord they are too big for feet."

"My child," He said in somber tones,
"For miles I carried you alone.
I challenged you to walk in faith,
But you refused and made me wait."

"You disobeyed, you would not grow,
The walk of faith, you would not know.
So I got tired, I got fed up,
and there I dropped you on your butt."

"Because in life, there comes a time,
when one must fight, and one must climb.
When one must rise and take a stand,
or leave their butt prints in the sand."
